Ryan Delepine, a young 19-year-old French developer, presented an emergency application called SOS+ to Apple last June, which he hopes to quickly deploy on the iPhone.
“I learned the code in nine months to be able to participate in the competition, it’s pretty crazy”, loose Ryan Delepine who admits not knowing other programming languages. At 19, this young man from Rennes is one of the young developers spotted by Apple and invited to take part in WWDC last June at Apple Park in Cupertino.
Thanks to his application called SOS+, which he created on his own, he is one of the winners of the Swift App Challenge, a competition organized by the company to crown the best applications under Swift, Apple’s coding tool.
“I wanted to make an app that made sense”
Not long ago, he completed his first year of BTS in commerce and designed interfaces as well as models of websites. He submits them to an Apple engineer he knows. “He was the one who introduced me to Swift and told me to enter this contest,” Ryan says. “I quickly realized that it was going to become a passion for me and that it would give a new dimension to my projects.”

And for the competition, he also needed an application project. Her dad working in the police, her brother taking the competition to become a firefighter and a whole family at the service of others, the idea comes from herself. “I grew up in a family where we want to help people. I wanted an application that made sense and that might allow users to have real added value, that it would serve everyone, with the most pleasant interface possible and the easiest to use, “says the Breton.
Thus was born SOS+, an application that provides emergency information for all situations. There are useful numbers (fire, police, SAMU, etc.), emergency actions to know in the event of cardiac arrest, discomfort or a simple nosebleed, and all kinds of information.
Emergency numbers just a click away
The application is presented in different parts: emergency numbers with a link to the page of the service sought; the list of all the numbers according to the country in which you are with a link to Apple Maps to find the nearest emergency center; an emergency questionnaire to assess the situation.

The questionnaire will allow you to know the level of urgency and redirect to the right service, to send an SMS also if you are not able to call. It is possible to add contacts to notify and they can be notified by SMS. Elements that make it an online counterpart to the satellite backup connection recently launched on the latest iPhones. There, it would work on all types of Apple smartphones.

Dreaming of being a developer at Apple Park
Still unfamiliar with English, the young man was nevertheless able to present his application to Susan Prescott, in charge of relations with the developers, but especially to Tim Cook in person during the developer conference. “It was a surprise to be able to present my application project to him, I was extremely happy to be able to do it”, recalls Ryan who, if he was impressed by the boss of Apple, found him “relaxed and easy to access”, attentive and interested.

And his SOS+ application left no one indifferent in Cupertino. It must be said that it has everything to please Apple: a name that sounds homemade, an interface that one would think taken from that of Apple, a humanist goal and an ease of use that meets the usual criteria. He now hopes that it can be deployed in the United States and France by 2024. While waiting for other projects that he matures.
From his time at WWDC and his discussions there, Ryan Delepine came back with stars in his eyes. “I’m really considering a career in development or design. I’m still hesitating,” he laughs, imagining himself already working at Apple Park later. “It would be really incredible, one of my biggest dreams”, enthuses the young boy who will for the moment return to his studies and his 2nd year of BTS.
