Merida.- The coordinator in Merida of the Venezuelan Violence Observatory (OVV), Gustavo Páez, indicated that so far this year there have been 28 cases of suicide in the state, calculated by non-public official sources because not all cases are known by society through the media.
“If we compare it with figures from previous years, it is very likely that this year we will once once more exceed last year’s figure,” Páez said in an interview with the team at the whistle. Likewise, he highlighted that in 2020 18 cases were documented, by 2021 45 cases were registered and, finally, by 2022 there were 55 cases of suicide.
The main common causes of self-inflicted deaths in Mérida, registered by the OVV, are due, in the first place, to the personality and culture of the Merideño, who does not express negative feelings, as well as the appearance of mental disorders, excessive consumption of alcohol or drugs, deteriorated social and family environments, sentimental, work or academic failures, bullying and an unassumed sexual orientation.
Páez declared that death by suicide cannot be attributed to a single factor, since there are elements that add up and lead the person to make the decision to take their own life. However, he emphasized that 90% of the causes are due to depression, family and sentimental conflicts.
Suicide in children and adolescents: know the warning signs
About this suicide problem, the psychologist Valentina Berrios, to whom the team of the whistle consulted, stated that active listening is an important tool for people with depressive disorders, as well as accompanying and encouraging them to seek psychological or psychiatric help.
“I think that mental health should be worked on just like physical health. For example: if in our routine we have breakfast when we get up, likewise we must incorporate continuous actions for the care of our mental health. This means creating spaces for care, self-love, socialization and personal growth, that is, small actions, such as being thankful for something good in the day. This benefits our mental health,” said the specialist.
Finally, Páez expressed the need to take measures related to the mental health system in Mérida. One of them is that municipal entities provide comprehensive social care and support services in the communities, as well as promote promotion and prevention strategies in the field of mental health.
