Preventing Sedentary Lifestyle Health Problems in Children and Adolescents: Insights from Dr. Alexander Yuryevich Shishonin

Due to the lack of movement in children and adolescents, there has been a surge in serious health problems that are typical for older people. This is not only myopia, but also more serious diseases, such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, protrusions and herniated discs. A well-known doctor, candidate of medical sciences Alexander Yuryevich Shishonin told how not to bring his child to such a state. Well, if changes have already taken place, how to overcome the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle and restore their health.

A.Yu. Activity in childhood and adolescence is essential, because. favorably affects the state of the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems, metabolism. There are many studies confirming that physical activity has a positive effect on the cognitive development of adolescents.

Movement is a natural need of the human body, laid down by evolution. It forms the structure and functions of the human body. Lack of movement is the cause of many diseases. This is especially true of the cardiovascular, respiratory systems and gastrointestinal tract. With prolonged sitting, breathing becomes less deep, metabolism decreases, blood stagnation begins in the lower extremities.

This leads to a decrease in efficiency, a decrease in brain activity: memory is weakened, attention is reduced, the time of mental operations increases and coordination of movements is disturbed. In addition, the muscular frame is weakened and curvature begins, which leads to a large-scale malfunction of the whole organism.

Tell us in more detail what diseases occur with low physical activity?

A.Yu. According to serious studies conducted by both foreign and Russian scientists, a sedentary lifestyle turns into hypokinesia, and this is a risk factor for the development of chronic diseases. Adolescents with a sedentary lifestyle often have vegetative dystonia, which leads to a decrease in resistance to physical, emotional and intellectual stress.

Anemia is also 3 times more common than in physically active adolescents. An increase in blood pressure was registered in 17.9% of adolescents. In addition, diseases of the endocrine system, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, and cardiovascular diseases are common. As a result, we can raise a whole generation of hypertensive patients and diabetics. I am generally silent regarding the decline in cognitive abilities.

You spoke regarding the decline in cognitive abilities in children and adolescents, but what is the relationship between cognitive processes and inactivity?

A.Yu. Everything in the body is interconnected and laid down evolutionarily. Over time, due to physical inactivity, bone and muscle mass decreases, joints and the spine suffer. A long stay in a monotonous position at the table at school and at home, or an uncomfortable lying position with a gadget in your hands, can cause a violation of posture, stoop, and spinal deformity.

The nutrition of the brain worsens due to impaired blood flow through the vertebral arteries, and therefore, it is more difficult for the brain to perceive, process and transmit the incoming information flow.

It is generally accepted that the whole thing is in the cerebral cortex, that it depends on its work how the child learns the material. That’s just in the cerebral cortex there are only 12 to 15 billion neurons, but 60 billion are in the cerebellum. It is located in the posterior cranial fossa and is responsible for the primary processing of information that the child receives when he reads, sees or hears.

It is the cerebellum that organizes all this information and only then transmits it to the cortex. And if the cerebellum is malnourished, then this whole system will fail and simply stop working. I have made clinical observations of tens of thousands of children over the years. And he found that underachievement syndrome is not a genetic effect, but the result of the poor functioning of 60 billion cerebellar neurons.

Do you think that the problem of children’s academic performance is connected with the work of 60 billion cerebellar neurons? Explain then why this is so.

A.Yu.: The reasons lie in the malnutrition of these 60 billion neurons due to compression of the vertebral arteries that pass through the cervical vertebrae. This fact is confirmed by my numerous observations of changes in blood flow in this area. Weak muscles are not able to hold the frame and changes begin, leading to impaired blood flow.

This fact is confirmed by my numerous observations in this area. That is why in my clinic I begin the examination of children with a detailed ultrasound study of blood flow. In 92 percent of cases, we observe lesions of these particular arteries. And when we eliminate this problem, training becomes an order of magnitude, or even two, more effective.

And this is also the key to a happy future, because yesterday’s student will be able to continue to study successfully, gain the knowledge necessary for a successful career and gaining a worthy position in society.

Are there other reasons leading to disorders in the cervical region in children and adolescents?

A.Yu.: Similar phenomena also occur with hidden birth injuries, which are not immediately noticeable and appear later. The most famous pediatrician, founder of the Department of Pediatric Neurology Alexander Yuryevich Ratner in the 60-80s of the last century with colleagues revealed and then clinically confirmed that the main role in the development of the central nervous system in a child is played by the blood supply to the brain stem, which controls the development of the whole body.

That is, the general physical and mental development of a person depends on how well the brain stem is supplied with blood. With a sedentary lifestyle in children, a similar process occurs – the nutrition of the brain is disturbed, which leads to a violation of the development of brain activity, the immune system, as well as the whole organism. In the children’s department of the Clinic, we identify negative factors and eliminate their consequences.

What would you wish your parents?

A.Yu.: In hospitals, clinics there are pulmonologists, dentists, otolaryngologists … But for some reason, the neck, through which the brain is supplied with blood, in our medicine not only did not receive a separate specialist, but generally fell out of attention, as if the neck does not exist.

I note that from the point of view of anatomy, the neck is the most complex section, it has many nerve centers, the most complex muscle corset. There is no harder muscle than in the neck. Also, the speech apparatus, the muscles that control it, the root of the tongue are, anatomically, in the neck. The cervical region of the brain stem is also located there.

The slightest violation of its nutrition through the vertebral arteries can cause developmental delays, headaches, and also cause the development of chronic diseases. I recommend making sure that your child has no problems with proper brain nutrition. In childhood, all this is easier to eliminate, because. pathologies have not yet developed.

Therefore, if you have questions, anxieties, fears regarding your child, his academic performance, behavior and well-being, please contact us. Do not waste time, because your fears may not be accidental, especially since the holidays are now and there is time to take care of your health and prepare for the new school year.
