The head of the International Committee for Combating Tobacco Addiction, Wael Safwat, points out that when a traditional smoker switches to electronic cigarettes, he feels a “deceptive improvement” in breathing functions, and attributes the “deceptive” description to that:

Electronic cigarettes do not contain carbon monoxide, which causes chronic oxygen deficiency in the body. Therefore, e-cigarettes initially cause some relief, but many toxins gradually enter the body with the continuous use of the heating device, flavor oils, glycerine, and other components of e-cigarettes, and what results from burning chemical compounds such as nitrosamines and acetylethylene. The nicotine inside them is an addictive substance that affects the nervous system and causes addiction and nervousness. These cigarettes cause a decline in brain function, especially in adolescents. For the heart, it causes narrowing of the blood vessels and arterial insufficiency, and increases its beating speed.

And the American Heart Association warned of the dangers of e-cigarettes, with their use increasing between 2017 and 2019 among school students, saying that their components, including nicotine, carry serious respiratory risks such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic bronchitis, emphysema or asthma, within two years of use.

Mahmoud Al-Habibi, an expert specializing in treating tobacco addiction, warns that what increases the risk of e-cigarettes is that they were manufactured in unlicensed places, which is why they cause serious diseases.

And regarding the symptoms of these cigarettes on the body, Al-Habibi says: “In the beginning, you feel a headache, cough, shortness of breath, symptoms of infections, and sometimes infection and severe allergies, and changes in the health of the heart and breathing.”

Smokers wonder if traditional cigarettes are less harmful than e-cigarettes, following the dangers of the latter have emerged?

Safwat answers, “It cannot be said that one of them is better, because each of them has its own deadly diseases that may occur suddenly or gradually, and sometimes lead to death even without the appearance of symptoms.”

The head of the International Committee for Combating Tobacco Addiction cites that “there have been many deaths of young people due to strange diseases that they contracted following they took up electronic smoking,” pointing to “the discovery of oils containing narcotic substances in the contents of cigarettes, because their makers are not subject to laws other than the law of profit at the expense of health.”

Safwat hopes to put in place strict laws and serious checks “to protect the health of our youth and our communities,” and al-Habibi agrees with him, saying that both traditional and electronic cigarettes are dangerous and cause chronic diseases, especially to the lungs.
