Vienna (OTS) – “The care of our patients in the central emergency room of the Ottakring Clinic is secured even in times when there is a higher incidence of acute cases,” explains Peter Glaeser, the Medical Director of the Ottakring Clinic today. “All emergencies that come to us are treated with the usual quality by doctors and nurses with the appropriate qualifications,” says Gläser. The head of the clinic firmly rejects any claims to the contrary. A report from some doctors that there might be an overload was responded to immediately.
High stress is part of the nature of an emergency department
The service in the central emergency room is characterized by the fact that there can always be peaks with a high patient frequency and thus a higher workload for the hospital staff. In contrast to an appointment outpatient clinic, it is never foreseeable how many emergencies have to be treated at what time. “The staff in this area is trained precisely for such requirements, which are part of the nature of an emergency room,” explains Gläser.
Overload notifications part of the solution
If individual doctors or nurses reach their stress limit, there is an overload notification tool that was specially developed for this purpose. With these written notes to the supervisor, employees can point out an imminent overload in a timely and preventive manner. The hospital management is then required to take measures as quickly as possible to relieve the people or departments who have made a report.
“Overload messages are part of the solution and not part of the problem,” Peter Gläser is convinced. This also applies to the report from the Ottakring clinic this week. “We do everything we can to provide support when there is a risk of overload. I’m currently in the emergency room myself to get an idea of the situation and draw any conclusions,” said Gläser confidently. On the day of the overload report, 80 patients were treated within 24 hours (Tue, July 18, 11 a.m. to Wed, July 19, 11 a.m.), including 43 rescues. This corresponds to a normal workload. However, several rescue calls at the same time might lead to a short-term overload, explains Director Gläser.
Solutions are the daily business of the clinic management
In any case, the Viennese population can assume that there will be an immediate reaction to every report, said Gläser. It is part of the daily business of the clinic management to find solutions when there is a risk of staff being overwhelmed. “The care in the central emergency room must be guaranteed around the clock and is guaranteed around the clock,” explains the medical director of the Ottakring Clinic.
