The Sun of Châteauguay | BMW M boss wants next M3 and M4 to be purely electric

2023-07-22 04:26:27

Here is heartbreaking news. We reassure you, a final decision has not yet been made, but the world boss of the M division, Frank van Meel has indicated that the next M will be either gasoline or fully electric, but not both at the same time.

An uncertain future

Scheduled for 2027 or 2028, the next M3 and M4 might remain petrol-powered or become fully electric. As early as 2022, Frank Weber, head of development at BMW, hinted that the next M3 might go electric. However, in a recent interview with Drive, M Division global boss Frank van Meel clarified the manufacturer’s position. He said electric-only versions of the M3 and M4 were a possibility, but only if they turned out to be significantly better than the previous generation. If BMW can meet its performance targets for new M vehicles by using an electric powertrain, then the next M3 and M4 will be electric.

No hybridization

Asked regarding the multiple powertrain options, Mr van Meel was quick to dismiss any suggestion that BMW would offer both petrol and electric versions, with the possibility of a hybrid electric vehicle. He felt that these three options were unrealistic and indicated that BMW would prefer to use only one powertrain. We were lucky enough to drive an M3 CS version and its 503 horsepower six-cylinder last week and frankly, we don’t see how in the short or medium term an M electric vehicle can approach this sensation behind the wheel. An electric vehicle is currently too heavy and the sound of the six-cylinder is a symphony that no electric vehicle can replace.
