On the heights of Champion, Christophe opens his hives one by one. “There can be up to 60,000 bees here. We are proud today. It is the culmination of a year of work,” says the beekeeper. Several members of the Namur beekeeping school are gathered for the summer honey flow“and it looks good. After a capricious spring, we have experienced the last few dry months. Flowering has been good.“
Inside each of the hives, frames filled with honey. “They are heavy, you can feel it! The weight can climb up to two kilos! We are not in an exceptional year, but we can be satisfied. Two years ago, we had nothing. Our harvests have become irregular. The winters are less cold and wetter. Which the bees absolutely do not appreciate.”
But the climate is not the only element that makes the practice of beekeeping more difficult: “25 years ago, it was enough to place a hive in the bottom of the garden. Today, you really have to pay attention almost daily to its swarms. There are parasites, Asian hornets and then pesticides. If you have your hive near a corn crop and it gets sprayed, your bees never come back. That’s hard!“
