The Jeu de Paume in Paris invites you to discover all the work of photographer Frank Horvat by devoting a major exhibition to him. Died in October 2020, the Italian of origin had become a real fashion reporter, with a singular look in black and white.

A model in an evening dress leaving the subway in the middle of a crowd. This aesthetic combining haute couture fashion and the popular Paris of the 1950s is the signature of Frank Horvat. The Jeu de Paume exhibition presents his fashion shots, captured on the spot in the heart of Paris. A revolution at a time when studio photography was still the norm. “The photos are magnificent, the prints are very beautiful”rejoices a woman.

His non-conformity always surprises visitors

Originally from Italy, the photographer fell in love with the capital and settled there in 1955. Frank Horvat then wanted to immortalize chic Paris, but not only that. His career as a photo reporter led him to take an interest in more sulphurous circles, such as in a series on prostitution. His career marks a turning point with the meeting of the photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. Three years following the photographer’s death, his non-conformism still surprises visitors. The exhibition is on view until September.
