The temperature continues to rise in Egypt during the coming days due to its impact on what is known as the “thermal dome” phenomenon, which controls the skies of several Arab countries, and led to the feeling of the residents of these countries in an unprecedented heat wave, in which the temperature recorded 50 degrees Celsius in the shade.
An unprecedented heat wave
The Information and Decision Support Center of the Council of Ministers stated that the country and a number of Arab countries are currently exposed to unprecedented rises in temperature, from which citizens in these countries suffer, as a result of the phenomenon of the thermal dome, which controls 7 Arab countries at the present time.
The Cabinet Information Center added, during a post on its official Facebook page, Thursday: “The Arab countries that are controlled by the thermal dome phenomenon and witnessing unprecedented temperature rises include: Egypt – Saudi Arabia – Iraq – Jordan – Syria – Lebanon – Palestine.”
The Information and Decision Support Center continued: “The temperatures measured in the shade in these countries reach 50 degrees Celsius, and this phenomenon may continue for a week or longer than that.”
For its part, satellite images and weather maps were shown on the official page of the Meteorological Authority On Facebook The large heat waves that hit many regions of the world, due to the effect of the heat dome phenomenon.
The maps showed that heat waves affected many regions of the world, due to the effect of thermal domes, which are a center of high atmospheric pressure values in the upper layers of the atmosphere that affect a specific area and do not move for a week or more.
The Meteorological Authority added that these areas of high atmospheric pressure result in hot weather, a lot of sunshine, and little clouds are formed, as the air descends from top to bottom in these areas, and thus temperatures rise during the period of the thermal dome effect, which was given this name because it traps the air inside it and cannot escape from it.
Regarding the causes of these phenomena, the General Authority of Meteorology confirmed that the climate crisis caused an exacerbation of heat waves in several regions around the world, ranging from 50% to 100% in most tropical regions, and up to 10 times in the whole world, according to a study conducted in 2022.
Egypt and the effect of the heat dome
And regarding the effect of the thermal dome phenomenon on Egypt, the meteorologists said that Egypt has been under the influence of a very hot wave for several days, and it is expected to continue until next week, and temperatures in Greater Cairo and Lower Egypt exceeded 40 degrees, and broke 45 degrees, in the governorates of the south and Upper Egypt.
With regard to the weather for the coming days, the Meteorological Authority expected that the severe heat wave would continue during the next week, and it is noticeable that temperatures will reach on some days as follows:
The temperature next Monday will be 46 degrees in the south of the country during the day. The temperature next Monday will be 40 degrees in the north of the country during the day. The temperature next Wednesday will be 46 degrees in the south of the country during the day. The temperature next Wednesday will be 40 degrees in the north of the country during the day.
The Meteorological Authority warned citizens of the following:
Direct exposure to sunlight, especially at noon, because it increases the sensation of heat, especially in light of the high humidity levels, which contribute to raising temperatures by regarding 3 perceptible degrees from recorded.
For its part, the Ministry of Health and Population issued an urgent appeal to citizens, and provided important advice to protect them from exposure to heat stress, in light of the unprecedented heat wave during the current summer.
The official spokesman for the ministry, Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, said that the ministry has prepared to deal with cases of heat stress and sunstroke injuries, in light of the high temperatures and humidity levels for a long time, explaining that the Minister of Health, Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, has ordered to raise the level of readiness in all the ministry’s hospitals and to take all measures to receive any cases of heatstroke.
The health spokesperson pointed out that the symptoms of sunstroke and heat exhaustion appear in the form of the following symptoms:
High body temperature Redness of the face Dry skin Eye inflammation The occurrence of general fatigue, accompanied by headache and muscle cramps Feeling dizzy with vomiting and delirium leading to loss of consciousness with abnormally rapid pulse and breathing.
Directives from the Ministry of Health
Abdel Ghaffar warned that symptoms of heat exhaustion may appear suddenly, as a person loses consciousness without warning, and that in the event of dizziness or loss of consciousness, one must immediately go to the nearest hospital, calling on citizens to do the following:
Drink plenty of water or fluids in sufficient quantities. Avoid being in poorly ventilated places. Wear loose, light-coloured cotton clothing to avoid heat exhaustion. Patients with chronic diseases should not be exposed to intense sun because they are the most vulnerable to sunstroke. Avoid walking in the sun for long distances. Use a sun umbrella or protective hats to prevent direct exposure to the sun. Adults, while drinking plenty of water. Reducing tea and coffee for their role in diuresis, which causes the loss of important salts for the body, which leads to dizziness and dehydration.
Abdel Ghaffar stressed that heat stroke is a medical emergency, and when feeling tired, a person should rest in the shade in a well-ventilated place or expose the body to fans or air conditioners.
He pointed out that the rapid decrease in basal body temperature is the basis for treating the injured, and that infants, children, the elderly (over 65 years), and patients prone to nervous spasms, who suffer from chronic diseases, especially heart diseases or high blood pressure, are the most vulnerable to the risks of heat stress, as they must stay home and not go out except for necessity.
