Art on the Walls: How Street Artists Work

Art doesn’t always have to hang on the wall. Jana and JS are street artists. They use walls, windows and doors as canvases.

your tool? Spray can and stencils. But there are many different types of street art. There is an artist who creates whole figures out of tiny tiles, others work with glued paper on the wall, you can also do something with Styrofoam. “Street art” is the greatest art movement of all time. It started in the 1960s and is now found in every part of the world. Street art used to be forbidden. In the meantime, however, some cities officially allow this art. “Then there are extra walls that everyone can spray on,” says JS.

The most famous street artist in the world is called Banksy. He also works with stencils. Nobody knows who he is. He wants his name kept secret. Banksy’s art is now available in pictures: lovers pay several million euros for it.

Jana and JS have been working together for 17 years. “We have already worked on house walls that were 20 meters high, or made pictures with a length of 25 meters. We sprayed on a stack of wood on the cut surface of tree trunks or placed our art on a 20 centimeter small stone.”

If you walk carefully through the city, you will see: there are already a lot of walls full of street art. And that’s why Jana says: “Somehow the element of surprise is missing. That’s why we started looking for unusual places. Like the pebbles on the banks of the Salzach.” And do they then go out at night armed with masks and spray cans to create their pictures? “No, absolutely not,” laughs Jana, “we don’t want to destroy anything. We’re usually invited, and then everything happens with permission.” A funny motif by Jana and JS is the man with the camera in front of his face and his finger on the shutter button. You really think you’re being snapped. “We always try to create a play with our work. Between what we paint and what’s around,” says JS. “We want our art to stimulate thought and arouse feelings.” Info: www.janaundjs.com
