JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli soldiers shot dead a 17-year-old Palestinian teenager in the occupied West Bank on Friday, Palestinian health authorities said, in the latest bloodshed in a cycle of violence spanning more than a year in the region.

The teenager, whom Palestinian health authorities identified as Muhammad Fouad Atta al-Bayed, was shot in the head by Israeli forces during riots in the village of Umm Safa, north of Ramallah. The town has been the target of attacks by Jewish settlers in recent weeks.

The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that Israeli forces fired live bullets, threw tear gas and stun grenades during clashes with the population. The Health Ministry confirmed that at least one other person was shot in the chest.

The Israeli army said a member of the border police’s paramilitary unit opened fire following stone-throwing by masked individuals at Israeli forces. He confirmed that one person was shot, but did not provide further details.

Earlier in the day, Palestinians and Israelis clashed in the village of Beit Umar, north of Hebron, in the southern West Bank. The army said three members of the Israeli forces were slightly injured, including an officer who was hit by shrapnel in an explosion.

He explained that the soldiers opened fire in response to the throwing of stones and explosives, wounding a person who had allegedly thrown a bomb. At the moment the Palestinian authorities have not revealed details of the events.

Earlier this month, Palestinian health authorities reported that Israeli soldiers shot a man in the chest during a demonstration in Umm Safa.

The spiral of violence, which shows no signs of abating, is one of the worst between Israelis and Palestinians in years. More than 150 Palestinians have been shot to death by Israeli forces since early 2023 in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, according to a tally by The Associated Press.
