US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director William Burns said on the 20th that Russian President Vladimir Putin is buying time while calculating how to deal with the leader of the Wagner mercenary group Prigezin who led the aborted mutiny.
Burns told the Aspen Security Forum (Aspen Security Forum), the BBC reported that the mutiny exposed a major weakness in the power system Putin built, and that he might still seek revenge on Priggin. “What we’re seeing is a very complicated dance.”
When someone asked regarding a recent image that appeared to show Prigezin in Belarus, Burns pointed out that he had been moving around but had recently been in the Belarusian capital Minsk and Russia, adding that Putin may be buying time to figure out how best to deal with Prigezin. The BBC pointed out that Wagner is still valuable to the Russian leadership in Africa, Libya and Syria, so Putin is likely to try to separate the group from the leader.
Burns said Putin may be waiting for precise retaliation, noting that he is basically someone who thinks that revenge is a dish best served cold. “In my experience, Putin is the ultimate advocate of revenge. So I would be surprised if Prigezin escaped further retribution.”
According to previous news, when US President Biden held a press conference in Helsinki, he once joked that Priggin should be careful regarding being assassinated, “Pay attention to all the food you enter, and keep your eyes open for the menu.” Burns echoed the quote, “If I were Priggine, I wouldn’t fire my food taster.”
