The Henley Passport Index ranks each quarter the passports that open the most doors to travel internationally without a visa. In the latest updated ranking of the most powerful passports in the world published on Tuesday July 18, 2023, Morocco has gained 9 places by positioning itself in 73rd place while it occupied 82nd place in March 2023. The Kingdom occupies the same rank as Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe. Note that this ranking includes 199 passports and 227 travel destinations. Regarding the Maghreb countries, the Tunisian passport ranks 70th and allows Tunisians to travel to 71 countries without a visa. Algeria comes far behind Morocco by positioning itself in 83rd place with 54 destinations. As for the Mauritanian passport, it ranks 78th with the possibility of traveling to 59 countries without a visa.

As for the Libyan passport, it ranks 95th in the world with 41 visa-free destinations. While for 7 consecutive years, Japan was at the top of the world ranking, it is now Singapore’s turn to occupy the 1st place in the ranking. The Singaporean passport allows its citizens visa-free access to 192 destinations. Among the 199 countries assessed, those from Europe are overrepresented at the top of the ranking. Indeed, the German, Spanish and Italian passports are the most powerful on the Old Continent and open the doors to 190 visa-free countries. They all come second. In third place, there are 7 countries with 189 destinations, namely Austria, Finland, France, Japan, Luxembourg, South Korea and Sweden. Four countries rank 4th with 188 visa-free destinations. These are Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom.

Seven countries are ranked 5th in the world with visa-free access to 187 countries: Belgium, the Czech Republic, Malta, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal and Switzerland. Australia, Hungary and Poland occupy 6th place with 186 destinations. Canada and Greece are in 7th position (185 countries). The United States, like Lithuania, occupies the 8th position in the ranking with 184 destinations. Three countries come in at the bottom of the ranking, namely Syria ranked in 101st position, followed by Iraq (102nd) and Afghanistan (103rd).

Nationals of these countries can travel to 30, 29 and 27 countries respectively without a visa. This new ranking reveals an increase in the number of passports offering maximum freedom to travel. That said, it shows once once more that not all passports are created equal and that huge disparities still persist between countries when it comes to travel freedom. The gap continues to widen between rich and poor countries.
