Formed in 1965 in New York thanks to an LSD trip, this colorful quartet operates a perfect synthesis between psychedelic folk and Californian pop – a recipe that quickly earned them phenomenal success with flower power youth, on a par with the Beach Boys and the Byrds. Alongside John and Michelle Phillips (husband and wife at the time) and Denny Doherty, Cass Elliot, nicknamed “Mama Cass”, embodies the soul of the group: recognizable among a thousand for her mezzo-soprano chest, her charisma and her voluptuous physique, far from conventional canons, the whimsical diva raises non-conformism to the rank of fine arts. Part of Greenwich Village before adopting the Californian tropism of the bohemian youth of the sixties, the adventure of Mamas and the Papas flourished in the Laurel-Canyon district of Los Angeles, a melting pot of musicians where they frequented Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, David Crosby and Eric Clapton. But also the members of the “Family” of Charles Manson, whose appalling murders put an abrupt end, in 1969, to this enchanted parenthesis… The group separated in 1971, and Cass Elliot died three years later, of a heart attack, at only 32 years old, at the height of a solo career which was only just beginning.
