2023-07-20 16:18:17

A mosquito control operation will take place in the Neuhof district of Strasbourg, on the night of July 20 to 21, 2023. A case of dengue fever was observed in a person who had recently stayed in a tropical country where this viral infection is present.

The health authorities will carry out the mosquito control of part of the Neuhof district in Strasbourg on the night of Thursday 20 to Friday 21 July 2023. The area concerned is located near the Schulmeister park. In 2022, a similar operation took place in the Orangerie district.

This operation comes following epidemiological and entomological investigations which led to the identification of an area frequented by a person suffering from dengue fever. The latter had just returned from a tropical country where the disease is present.

Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted by the bite of a tiger mosquito. THE most common symptoms are high fever, headache, body aches, nausea and rash.

Most sufferers have mild or no symptoms and recover in one to two weeks. In some cases, the infection can be severe and cause a person to be hospitalized.

The insecticide treatment will take place in the area concerned subject to suitable weather conditions. This is, according to theregional health agency, a usual procedure to prevent the transmission of dengue fever to other inhabitants of the neighborhood. Indeed, the mosquito that has bitten the person can infect others during the so-called “viremia” period, that is to say the time during which the virus remains present in the blood.

The people of Strasbourg and street establishments concerned have been informed of the mosquito control. Precautions to take if you live in the area: stay inside the buildings, leave the windows closed during the intervention, rinse the garden furniture with water or bring the animal bowls inside.

To avoid exposure of the population to the insecticide, a security perimeter will be established during the intervention, and within 30 minutes therefollowing.
