JOHANNESBURG (Archyde.com) – More than 40 countries are interested in joining the BRICS, a senior South African foreign ministry official said on Thursday.

South Africa’s BRICS summit is scheduled for August 22-24, and membership expansion will be one of the main topics on the agenda. Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced his absence.

BRICS consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. It aims to break away from the US and European leadership in the international community.

So far, 22 countries have formally applied for membership, a senior South African official said. “An equal number of countries have expressed an interest in informal membership, including all major countries in the Global South,” he said.
