This is not the first time that we relay the testimony of an owner victim of a tenant who lacks respect for him. But the story of Joost, who rents a villa in Waregem, is beyond comprehension.
Joost’s villa has five bedrooms, so a whole family (grandparents, parents and children) moved in two years ago. Until recently, everything was going well, but six months ago, a daughter of the former tenant and her companion became tenants. This is where the trouble started.

Because as he explained to Nieuwsblad, Laatste Nieuws and Krant van West-Vlaanderen, Joost indeed had to call in a bailiff to put his tenants out. They hadn’t paid his rent for six months. “And they hadn’t even paid a rental guarantee,” Joost told Nieuwslad.
And the least we can say is that the tenants wanted to leave their mark on the house. When he found his villa, Joost indeed found it in a deplorable state: “There is rubbish everywhere, there is dog droppings… Everything must be repainted”, regrets Joost.

“The windows and doors are full of scratches, there are excrement everywhere… I’m going to have to redo the whole garden…”. “The fridge was full of rot… The toilets are disgusting,” he adds in the columns of Laatste Nieuws.

“I mightn’t even open my garage,” continues the owner. “There is brol up to the ceiling. Ditto in a room upstairs… The wallpaper is torn… I will have to repaint everything,” he concludes.

Joost estimates that it will take six weeks to put everything back in order. And if he knows that the costs must in theory be paid by the tenants, he has no hope.
