The number of unemployed stood at 353,000 at the end of June. This means that 3.5 percent of the working population is unemployed at home. That is the same as a month earlier, Statistics Netherlands reports Thursday.
Unemployment in our country has been very low for some time now. Companies have noticed for a long time that it is very difficult to find staff. However, unemployment is currently slightly higher than last year, when only 3.2 percent of the working population was at home.
You are considered unemployed if you are immediately available for a job and have recently looked for it. For example, there are more than 3 million Dutch people between the ages of 15 and 75 who do not have a job, but are not seen as unemployed because they are unavailable or have not recently looked for work. This concerns, for example, pensioners or the disabled.
At the end of last month, 152,600 Dutch people received unemployment benefits. That is 1,700 more than the previous month, representing an increase of 1.1 percent. However, it is less than a year ago, when regarding 160,000 people were on unemployment benefits.
