The 20 Hours takes you inside a villa located in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin (Alpes-Maritimes), in a very contemporary style, which was however built almost a century ago. It is the work of an Irish woman, a pioneer of modern architecture.

On the Côte d’Azur, in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin (Alpes-Maritimes), there is an all-white villa clinging to its rock, like a liner which has dropped anchor. From each room, the view is breathtaking on the sea. The holiday home has become an icon of modern architecture. The look of the villa is ultra contemporary, yet it is almost a century old. It was built in 1929 by Eileen Gray, an Irish designer. Roof terrace, concrete structure, long bay windows, this is not at all the style of the time.

Design icons

In the 1920s, the villas of the Côte d’Azur had an imposing facade and a busy interior. Nothing to do with the house on a human scale, 120m2 organized around a living room. There is no partition for a sleek style. “This house has always been at the forefront of modernity, it is an ONVI even today. It uses very innovative ventilation techniques (…), it is a concentrate of modernity”, details Antide Viand, administrator of the modern cape and the center of national monuments. Eileen Gray fitted out the interior herself. A century later, the villa’s furniture has become design icons.
