Exploring the Experimental Music World of Vienna: A Journey Through the Zeit-Ton Archive

2023-07-20 16:28:17

On June 2, 1993, the first “Zeit-Ton” program went on air. In this anniversary year, we dive into our rich “time sound” archive at irregular intervals in order to present you with programs that we remember particularly brightly, as we do today.

The experimental musical world of Vienna seems to be seething in the mid/late 1990s. The label mego gets a lot of attention, wild mixtures of the musicians involved perform on long mego nights. Slowly it emerges that the musicians Peter Rehberg and Christian Fennesz, no matter how different they think, feel and work, are the powerhouses of these awakenings. And in the Ö1 Welt between ORF musikprotokoll in steirischer herbst and the daily series “Zeit-Ton” it all pops up, of course.

In 1997, Christian Fennesz released his first solo album entitled “Hotel Paral.lel”. This leads to Fennesz’s first longer appearance in “Zeit-Ton”. The following year, that is October 1998, they are all on stage at the musikprotokoll in Graz. The orchestra 33 1/3 by and with Kurzmann and Fennesz performs, but also a trio, which in retrospect looks like a personal variation of the legendary Fenn O’Berg Trio, namely Jim O’Rourke, Peter Rehberg and Ramon Bauer.
The performance contains much of what the music by and with and around Peter Rehberg (and in variations also Fennesz) was known for at the time: It is noisy and fragmented, it can take on hypnotic intensity in between, which is then immediately broken once more, there are moments in which one is not averse to a subtle touch of kitschy, and the improvised music seems to gain its surprising form and dramaturgy throughout.

After the concert I go to Peter Rehberg and ask him if he would like to mix a version himself from the recording of this performance, which we might then put on the documentation CD of this musikprotokoll. “Sure” replies Peter Rehberg, who likes to be succinct, “I’ll send it to you. How long should it be?”. For regarding 20 minutes I say whatever makes musical sense to you. And sure enough, post will come soon following. And this version has a few surprises in store. First, the piece is not “regarding twenty minutes” long, but exactly 20 minutes and zero seconds to the second. As if I hadn’t ordered a piece of music, but yard goods. A typical, bone dry, ironic Rehberg move. And secondly, the announcement of the piece, which actually shouldn’t have been on it at all, is not found before the piece, but in the middle of the piece following several minutes. And then completely deconstructed. And similarly, the applause is not following the piece, but mixed in somewhere in the middle.
