The regional health administration changes its way of doing things

The regional health administration in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean did things differently this year to prepare for this vacation period, which was welcomed by the workers.

There will be a decrease in traffic in the operating theaters of the six hospitals in the region. The regional administration applies this principle, a modulation of health services in general.

“A modulation does not mean a break in services,” said CIUSSS Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean spokesperson Mélissa Bradette. There are also beds in some departments that will be temporarily closed.”

Urgent surgeries will all be performed, despite the slowdown in the medicine and surgery units of Chicoutimi, Alma and Roberval.

This way of approaching the vacation period is welcomed by the Federation of Nurses of Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean.

“It was managed in a more humane way than in the past,” said the regional president of the Federation Julie Boivin. Previously, managers wanted to keep the same volume of services and forced employees to stay at work overtime, even mandatory.

However, the situation remains fragile in obstetrics in Roberval and Dolbeau-Mistassini. For the moment, the health authorities refuse to consider a break in services, and speak instead of a contingency plan.

“For example, if we have to close Roberval, the pregnant woman can be redirected to Dolbeau-Mistassini, Alma or even Chicoutimi, depending on the state of her pregnancy, explained Mélissa Bradette. Roberval and Dolbeau-Mistassini are two places where we have labor issues.”

“We cannot really provide a solution in the middle of summer, mentioned Julie Boivin. Recruitment is not only a question of work, but also of the living environment. But we must attract healthcare professionals to the Haut du Lac.”

The pediatric services of the Chicoutimi hospital will also be modulated for a few weeks.

“It’s something that we see from year to year,” said pediatrician Jean-Benoît Bouchard, from the department of pediatrics and neonatology in Saguenay-Lac-Jean. It allows staff to take vacations.

Beds currently closed in the emergency room can be reopened if the number of people increases.
