Fluoroquinolones should be reserved for certain bacterial infections where the use of a fluoroquinolone is essential and should be avoided in situations where other antibiotics may be used.
In practice, the fluoroquinolones should not be prescribed for :
treat non-severe or self-limiting infections; prevent traveller’s diarrhea or recurrent lower urinary tract infections; treat non-bacterial infections, such as non-bacterial (chronic) prostatitis; treat infections of mild to moderate severity (including uncomplicated cystitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), acute bacterial rhinosinusitis and acute otitis media), unless other antibiotics usually recommended for these infections are deemed inappropriate; patients who have already experienced serious adverse effects with an antibiotic from the quinolone/fluoroquinolone family.
