The name is sugar-free, sugar-free, and if diabetics eat it, blood sugar rises?
Sugar alcohol component in ‘Zero’ snack causes binge eating and blood sugar rise

“My dad is diabetic, so I bought zero snacks because they were sugar-free.” Ms. Park (50, Yeonje-gu, Busan), a housewife who bought ‘sugar-free snacks’ at her mart for her diabetic husband, was shocked by her son’s return.

Do you know that ‘sugar-free snacks’ are poisonous to diabetics and dieters? In fact, if you try sugar-free snacks, the sweetness is similar to that of regular snacks. These sugar-free, sugar-free snacks contain an ingredient called ‘sugar alcohol’, and representative types include xylitol, malitol, and erythritol.

The components of sugar alcohols are, simply put, organic compounds derived from common sugars. Therefore, it has a structure very similar to sugar. Because of the name ‘alcohol’, it may be misunderstood that it is a component of alcohol that is commonly included in alcoholic beverages we know. However, alcohol entering liquor is a type of ‘ethyl alcohol’, and alcohol in sugar alcohol is a type of ‘*polyhydric alcohol’. In other words, they simply end up with the same alcohol, but with completely different ingredients.

*Polyhydric alcohol: Refers to alcohols with two or more hydroxyl groups (-OH) in one molecule.

Sugar alcohols have a sweet taste, but have side effects because they are not real sugar. People who manage sugar may feel betrayed by the side effects of sugar alcohol. Our body’s digestive enzymes can only break down sugars such as fructose and glucose. Therefore, when sugar alcohol, a fake sugar, comes in, the reaction to fill the real sugar causes gluttony.

The biggest problem is that there are many snacks that are often advertised under the name ‘sugar-free and sugar-free’. However, this sugar alcohol raises the blood sugar level and increases the risk of sugar alcohol diabetes. Maltitol, one of the types of sugar alcohols mentioned above, has a GI (Glycemic Index) of 36, representing the level of blood sugar rise, which is regarding 57% of that of sugar. It seems low, but it is especially fatal for diabetic patients who have to measure and manage their blood sugar levels every day.

Consumers focus on buying ‘no sugar, no sugar’, which is more expensive than regular snacks. If you look at the representative Lotte Confectionery’s ‘ZERO’ chocolate chip ingredients, the sugar content is 0%, but the sugar alcohol content is 18g. It is not enough to focus only on sugars.

For dieters, it seems like a good substitute for sweets that contain regular sugar. However, it can be fatal for diabetic patients who manage their daily diet and check their sugar levels at home every 3 hours before and following meals.

Ms. Park said, “My husband has sugar, so I bought sugar-free snacks, but following he ate them, the sugar didn’t catch on and I was worried because it kept rising. I was so shocked to hear that his son said that the ingredients in the snack raise blood sugar levels,” he said, “I bought it believing that it was sugar-free…” and blurted out his words.

I actually experienced how much the sugar rises when I ate ‘sugar-free, no-saccharide’ snacks. As a non-diabetic person, I measured once before eating snacks and once more 10 minutes following eating zero snacks. It is not an accurate figure due to the short time difference, but when it comes to sugar-free and sugar-free that they put forward, the sugar must remain the same without rising so that it is not just the name ‘zero’.

The sugar measurement result was 96 before intake and 106 following intake as shown in the picture. When measuring sugar, you should measure it once before a meal and two hours following a meal to know the exact level. Therefore, although it cannot be said to be accurate because it was measured in a short time of 10 minutes, it was possible to visually confirm that the sugar rose slightly. If you are seduced by the word ‘shaman’ and think that this level will be fine, and consume a few, you may be scolded by the fearful ‘ZERO’ betrayal. Diabetes patients seem to need to check the ingredient label before purchasing.
