Optimal Care for Patients: The Future of Hospital Sites and Health Centers in Province

François Huberty, provincial president of Les Engagés, was satisfied with the decision of Ministers Borsus and Tellier on the appeal brought by Vivalia last spring, with a view to obtaining the single permit necessary for the construction of the Houdemont site.

“Nevertheless, specifies the Provincial President, we must take into account the concerns of the arrondissement of Arlon and think regarding a future that makes sense for all current hospital sites. We are there and will continue to be particularly attentive to it”.

The file had divided the political group. We know that the “centrist burgomasters of the South”, such as Vincent Magnus (Arlon), François Kinard (Aubange) and Josy Arens (Attert) were the biggest opponents of this project. The party wants to close ranks. “The Engagés are therefore calling on Vivalia to quickly build, hand in hand with the municipalities concerned, local projects for the health centers that have yet to see the light of day in the territory, in combination with the centre-south hospital and that of Marche-en-Famenne, with the priority objective of optimal care for patients, including in terms of mental health and rehabilitation. Our main concern remains the quality of health care for all residents of the province. However, this decision will not allow us to respond alone to the crying needs that we make our own. We point out in particular the difficulty of recruiting specialist doctors and nurses, the arduous nature of the work and the schedules…”

For Les Engagés, the essential battles to be waged for patients and workers consist of:

• salary increases

• tax exemption for overtime

• the recognition of these trades as arduous

• the abolition of INAMI quotas

• the urgency of finding a solution concerning the taxation of French cross-border workers The issue of health care, the priority of the Engagés, deserves all the attention of the parties present in the federal and regional governments, and particularly for rural areas. We will continue our relentless action in this direction.
