On Friday, Georges Gilkinet presented a project providing in particular for the total ban on night flights (between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.) from October 2024. The proposal immediately aroused numerous criticisms, particularly in the aviation sector within the meaning broadly and from other political parties.
UBT-FGTB, the union representing in particular workers in airport assistance, freight and passenger transport, joined the list of critics. The socialist trade union stresses in particular the importance of the airport as an economic centre. Night flights are an “essential element”. A “rash ban” is not the answer to addressing legitimate concerns regarding noise and environmental impact, the union said.
“As a union, we are open to constructive discussions on reducing noise pollution and environmental impacts, but a unilateral ban on night flights is not the right approach,” concluded Frank Moreels, president of the union. UBT-FGTB.
