Xiaomi’s entry-level cell phones are always among the best options in terms of cost-effectiveness. If you are looking for a cell phone to buy under R$ 1300, you have come to the right place: we are going to analyze two devices here, the Redmi Note 11S (launched in 2022) and the Redmi Note 12 4G (launched in 2023). Both are available to buy here in Brazil.

cameras

In terms of cameras, these two devices are very different, at least in terms of specifications. Starting with the Note 11S, it has a 108MP main cameraone 8MP ultrawidesensor macro de 2MP and a sensor depthalso with 2MP. This is all in this rear module of the cell phone. At the front, we have only one sensor, 16MP para selfies.

On the Note 12 4G, the cameras are more “normal”, so to speak. A wide principal tem 50MP, an ultrawide also of 8MP and a little sensor macro de 2MP. A cselfie camera is also more modest, with 13MP.

Technical specifications don’t mean much. Let’s test it in practice and see which of these two takes better pictures.

Starting with our famous palm tree photo. You might even think that the Note 12 photo looks better, as the grass tone is much warmer and more natural. The problem is that this grass is not natural, it is synthetic. The Note 11S, with its cooler and more saturated colors, managed to better capture the real colors of the image.

The same thing happens here, in the photo of the plant. Note 12 put this hot filter that even made the image prettier, but it has nothing to do with what I was seeing personally when I took the picture.

This photo of Hot-wheels I really liked. The background was blurred pretty cool on both devices, but the 11S photo ended up with more details on the car and the background blurred too, which I consider to be a better result.

On the underside of the Hotwheels I did something I don’t usually talk regarding and took a Macro shot. Both phones have a miserable 2MP sensor, but look at the difference. I didn’t think you might make the macro camera worse, but the Note 12 did. It’s not even worth opening this sensor.

Returning to the main sensor, in this photo of the pens we can see the warm tones of the Note 12. I will confess that in this example I prefer the photo of the Note 12, since it has much more contrast in the shadows than the 11S.

In the photo of the S90C from Samsung that we reviewed recently, link on the card, the difference in contrast was very visible. On the Note 11S the shadows practically disappeared from the image, everything is washed out.

In this studio photo, we can see the different way in which HDR works on both phones. In the 11S, the camera chose to blow everything: since the environment is dark, the cell phone put a lot of exposure to prioritize image clarity. On the Note 12, however, it didn’t burst, it had a lot of shadows and contrast, but in the end we have a photo with less detail. Neither of them is wrong, they are different pictures.

In selfies I’ll pass quickly because the two sensors are very similar. I will say that the only differences I noticed were the cool tones on the 11S and warm tones on the Note 12, which naturally leaves the Note 12 with better selfies. But photos on it are less detailed – it seems that even with smoothing turned off on both devices, the Note 12 still softens face detail a bit.

The Note 11S was designed to be a better camera version of the regular Note 11, so I wasn’t surprised to see it do better.

Hardware and Performance

In the hardware and performance department is usually where new phones beat the last generation. The Note 12, for example, comes equipped with the processor Snapdragon 685, with 6nm lithography. The Note 11S already has the processor Mediatek Helio G96of 12nm.

The Note 12 4G being sold here in Brazil has 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The 11S has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

So here we have a more updated processor from the Note 12 once morest the two gigs more RAM from the Note 11S. Who win?

In the synthetic benchmarks, the Note 11S managed to stay ahead in all: In AnTuTu, it had a score of 303 thousand once morest the 282 of the Note 12.

In GeekBench, the Note 11S scored 527 points in the single core and 1866 in the multi core, once morest 472 single and 1463 multicore for the Note 12.

But what regarding games? On the Roda Liso channel, we tested these two in several different games. The performance of the two was very similar, often the same in games like Diablo Immortal, COD Mobile and Genshin Impact. Average 30 to 40 frames with graphics in performance mode in almost all games.

For light games, these phones work, but you’ll need to invest a little more if you want a phone that runs Fortnite, for example.

Concluding the performance, despite the Note 12 being a new Snapdragon, from 2023, it loses in performance to the Mediatek processor of the Note 11S. Victory here for the Redmi Note 11S.

Battery

The two cell phones have that standard battery capacity of 5000mAh. The chargers are also the same, supporting up to 33W with fast charging.

To test how long the cell phone can last working, we developed a test where we analyzed the cell phone for a period of 7h45 of intense use. There are several scenarios, such as games, video recording, browsing social networks, all of this to simulate to the maximum what you would do with your smartphone during a day of use. All cell phones that pass through here we test the battery, but which one lasts longer, the Note 11S or the Note 12?

Redmi Note 11S Redmi Note 12 Screen time +7h45min +7h45min Battery consumption 84% 88% Charging time 54min 1h05min Test completed Yes Yes

The results were very similar: The Note 11S completed the test and consumed 84% of the battery. The Note 12 also completed the test, but consuming 88% of the total battery.

The Note 11S loaded a little faster too, from 0 to 100% battery in just 54 minutes, versus 1h05 minutes for the Note 12.

Our tests proved that the Note 11S lasts longer and loads faster, but the difference is small. In this category, I’ll give it a tie: the difference is not big enough to justify a defeat, since both phones are very efficient and Xiaomi’s fast charging guarantees that you won’t have to run following the socket during the day.

???? Winner: A tie!

design and build

Now for my favorite part, the construction and design of these two phones. Both are considered entry-level intermediaries, and this is evident in the way they are built: They are entirely made of plastic, but have some differences: the main one is the physical size: the Note 12 is much larger and heavier than its predecessor. It seems that Xiaomi decided to adopt a design with a larger screen for its entry-level phones, just like Samsung did.

The Note 11S, on the other hand, has that classic 2022 cell phone design. It’s not that big and the corners are slightly rounded.

In colors, the Note 11S is available in white, light blue and graphite gray. The Note 12, on the other hand, said goodbye to white and brought a new color, green, because, let’s face it, when was the last time we saw a white Redmi? Most people buy blue or gray.

Personally, I’m such a fan of graphite gray that I chose the same color for both.

It’s worth mentioning here that, despite being the same color, the Note 12’s finish is slightly different – it’s smoother to the touch and glossier too.

Both have the same protections: The screen is Gorilla Glass 3, they already come with a removable film from the factory, a silicone case in the box and even has IP-53 protection once morest dust and splashes.

Another difference is that the Note 12 lost the stereo sound – it only has one speaker down here, once morest two in the Note 11S.

As much as I prefer the look of the Note 12, I have to give it a tie in this external construction category: same protections, all plastic, identical digital reader and volume, in short, apart from the size, these two phones are almost identical.

???? Winner: A tie!

Bodies

On screen, we have two AMOLED panels, but the Note 12 is bigger, it is 6.67 inches in size, FULL HD resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate.

The Note 11S has a 6.43-inch screen, also FULL HD, but with a 90 Hz refresh rate.

The 12’s screen is slightly brighter than the Note 11S’s, 1200 nits versus 1000. This will only make a difference when you’re using the phone in the sun, the icons and screen contents are a little more visible on the Note 12.

In terms of image quality, we have excellent panels here. I am always impressed with the contrasts of the AMOLED screens that Xiaomi puts in even its cheapest phones.

The winner here is the newer phone, the Note 12. It’s not a big win – the 11S’s screen is still excellent, but the Note 12’s has a higher refresh rate and more brightness.

Prices

At the time we recorded this video, the Note 11S can be purchased here in Brazil for around R$1,300. The Note 12, on the other hand, became much cheaper in the last month, it is constantly on sale for regarding a thousand reais.

The reality is that the Redmi Note 11S has dropped almost nothing in price since it was launched over a year ago, and that needs to change. If you find a promotion that takes the price closer to a thousand reais, then it is interesting to consider buying it. Until then, the Note 12 wins the price category.

???? Winner: Galaxy A54

Conclusion

These two cell phones should be costing around R$1,000, but the stores are keeping the Note 11S price up there. This makes no sense, since in the range of R$ 1300, 1400, the Note 11S competes directly with an intermediary from Samsung, the Galaxy A34. It is one of the most popular cell phones of the moment.

It is one of the most popular cell phones and is sure to be Samsung’s top seller. We are currently testing it – soon I left a review and Roda Liso.

By the specs, the performance of the A34 simply detonates that of the Note 11S and Note 12. And the cameras, I bet they are much better too, since even the Galaxy A14 beat the Note 12 in our comparison.

Once we have completed all tests of the Galaxy A34, we will update this comparison. It competes directly with the 11S, as both cost regarding the same price.

While the Note 11S does not drop in price, it is worth buying the Note 12. If you have 300 reais more to invest, I recommend the Galaxy A34.
