A marine corpsman was found dead following being swept away by the rapids while searching for a missing person in Naeseongcheon, Yecheon, North Gyeongsang Province.
According to the Gyeongbuk Provincial Fire Headquarters and the Marine Corps, at around 11:10 pm on the night of the 19th, search authorities found Private A of the Marine Corps 1st Division Artillery Battalion near 400m downstream of Gopyeong Bridge in Naeseongcheon, Yecheon-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do.
The Gyeongbuk 119 Special Response Team was conducting a night search with a drone, and following identifying Private A in red, the search crew salvaged it.
Private A was loaded into a Marine Corps helicopter at around 0:45 am today (20th) and transferred to the Naval Pohang Hospital.
The family members of Private A, who were waiting near the search site, also heard the news and headed to the Naval Pohang Hospital.
Private A, who was put into the Yecheon area flooding site on the 18th, went missing yesterday (19th) at around 9:10 am while searching for missing people while being swept away by a torrent.
It is said that the two crew members who fell into the water together escaped, but Private A did not come out.
Private A’s family exploded in anger that the Marine Corps did not provide even the minimum safety equipment, such as life jackets, to the crew.
The Marine Corps said in a text message sent to the reporters of the Ministry of National Defense early this morning, “The Marine Corps Safety Group is generally inspecting and supplementing the safety of the units involved in the heavy rain damage recovery operation.”
