According to their boss, Yevgeny Prigoschin, the Russian Wagner mercenaries will no longer fight in the Ukraine, but should gather their strength in Belarus for new missions in Africa. In a video published today, Prigozhin apparently welcomes members of his private army in Belarus. “You have done a lot for Russia. What is happening at the front is a disgrace that we do not have to be a part of,” the recording said, referring to Ukraine.
“We fought honorably”, but they may return there “if we can be sure that we will not be forced to dishonor ourselves.” The recording was published on Prigozhin’s official Telegram channel. Their authenticity might not be verified. The video was taken following dark, showing a group of men and the profile of a man matching Prigozhin’s. The voice also resembles that of the co-founder of the Wagner Group.
Would be the first sign of life since the uprising
If the recording turns out to be genuine, it would be the first sign of life from him since the aborted uprising last month. Prigozhin was last seen in public on June 24 in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don. Belarus has since said the mercenaries are training the troops of its close Russian ally.
According to the video, Prigozhin asked his men to behave in Belarus. He said their training will make the country’s army the second best in the world. Meanwhile, the mercenaries are supposed to gather their strength “for a new journey to Africa”. Prigozhin was handed a black Wagner flag with the motto “Blood, Honor, Motherland, Courage” written on it.
