It’s not just in the NBA that things move during the offseason. In Europe too, and especially for the Frenchman Petr Cornelie. Goodbye Real Madrid, hello Monaco.

The news fell this Wednesday at the end of the followingnoon: the 27-year-old tricolor interior Petr Cornelie (2m11, 108 kilos) has decided to commit to three seasons with the Principality club. He leaves Real Madrid following a year, during which he won the Euroleague.

An essential change of direction in the eyes of Cornelie, who had a rather minor role in Madrid with 15 minutes of play per evening for stats of 5 points and 3 rebounds on average in around sixty games, championship and EuroLeague combined. The Frenchie did not participate in the Final Four of the C1, which inevitably remains a bit in his throat despite the beautiful line he now has on his CV.

If Petr Cornelie arrives in Monaco today, it is precisely to get more playing time, to become “a major player in a very competitive team” currently playing at the highest European level. We recall that Monaco also participated in the Final Four of the EuroLeague (to finally finish third) this year while winning the French championship.

“In my opinion, they were the most interesting team today” said Petr Cornelie on the club’s official website. “That is to say that they have shown a progression over the last few years which is really beautiful. It’s a growing, winning club. Honestly, this choice was obvious to me. Whether it’s with the title and the Final Four, it’s beautiful to see.

Petr Cornelie is thus returning to France for the first time since 2021 and his time at Élan Béarnais Pau-Orthez. In the meantime, he made a few appearances for the Denver Nuggets in the NBA while passing through the G League box (where he was top rebounder in 2022), before leaving for Madrid. He was also part of the France group at the Tokyo Olympics, winning a very nice silver medal.

“I come to Monaco with the ambition of going for the Euroleague.”

– Petr Cornelie
