BRICS Summit: Putin’s Absence Amidst ICC Arrest Warrant Controversy

Cape Town: Russian President Vladimir Putin has abstained from attending the BRICS summit as the International Court of Justice’s (ICC) arrest warrant is pending over allegations of child abduction during the occupation of Ukraine. Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, which is an association of countries, had earlier sent an invitation to the heads of four other countries for the BRICS summit.

Putin’s presence became a problem following the International Court of Justice issued an arrest warrant last March. The rule is that Putin should be arrested and extradited to countries that have signed the ICC agreement. Considering this, Putin decided to stay away as per the bilateral decision. The summit is on August 22-24. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will attend instead of Putin.
