Slovak interior minister ousted after two months

At the same time, she gave Odor the task of leading the Ministry of the Interior in his capacity as head of government. Odor’s cabinet of civil servants was only installed by the president on May 15, and Simko is the first minister to leave it once more.

The reason for Simko’s dismissal was a dispute with the chief police officer. After the murder of a woman, Simko accused the police of not taking previous reports and warnings from the later victim’s family too seriously. On Facebook, however, he also emphasized that the work of the police must be controlled by politicians in a constitutional state. The chief of police interpreted this as an attempt at supervision.

The current police leadership is politically controversial. It was deployed by a conservative-populist coalition government in office from 2020 to 2023 as part of a so-called “cleansing” of the police apparatus. The social-democratic opposition accuses her of politically motivated arbitrariness. Under the pretext of fighting corruption, they manipulate witness statements and evidence in order to be able to take targeted action once morest social democratic politicians. Until recently, Simko was a member of a non-governing conservative small party. The Social Democrats are leading in the polls ahead of the parliamentary elections in two months.
