Vice President of Human Interface at Apple, Alan Dye (one of Jony Ive’s direct successors), spoke in an interview with the podcast Design Matters with Debbie Millman that “only Apple might make a product” like the Vision Proan augmented/virtual reality headset that the company announced at WWDC23.
Calling the product the most challenging design program in Apple’s history (it involves around 5,000 patents), Dye highlighted the difficulty of putting into practice ideas such as keeping users connected to the people around them.
This concept was even what motivated the company to place a screen on the outside of the headset, which allows people around to view a “projection of the eyes” of who is using the headset — which gives the impression that it is a “transparent” device.
For Dye, everything in Vision Pro was invented, including this feature, which he called the “first user interface for the rest of the world” developed by Apple.
Another point addressed by the designer was the headset’s ability to record highly immersive video and audio. According to him, this detail almost made many of those responsible for the Vision Pro sad for not having had the device when their children were younger (or when they were the children themselves).
