It will occur in locations that this Tuesday had records below zero. In the metropolitan area, maximum temperatures of 25° are expected. The impact on respiratory diseases.
The consequences of climate change are received week by week. There was already talk that this would be a warmer winter than usual, with minimum temperatures not so low and maximum temperatures above average. And the variation that will be registered in seven days is a good example: in three or four days it will pass from temperatures below freezing to the 30 degrees that are forecast for Saturday.
The thermal oscillation seems very abrupt. However, it is not that unusual. Mauricio Saldívar, a meteorologist, explains that it usually happens every winter. “It is something normal. The variability of the weather and the climate is due to many factors. In winter you can have short periods of high temperatures. It is not something atypical for these changes to occur. What is abnormal is the average of the minimums, which are now higher for winter averages.
The specialist explains what is the phenomenon behind these changes in the thermometer. “The weather is related to pressure centers. In our case it is the anti-semi-permanent subtropical cyclones that follow the apparent displacement of the Sun. These anti-cyclones are located off the coast of the Province of Buenos Aires in summer, that is why we have hot air during those months. And in winter it moves to the north and is located in front of the state of Santa Catalina, in Brazil. This causes cold air from Patagonia to rise north and reach Buenos Aires. But this phenomenon has oscillations, and that makes that cold air enters in summer or warm air in winter”.
Saldívar also recalled that in 1979 the highest maximum temperature occurred during the winter in Buenos Aires. That year the thermometer reached 30 degrees. “And the lowest was in 1965 with 2 degrees below zero in the City of Buenos Aires,” said the meteorologist. He also mentioned that due to climate change “winters are being increasingly shorter and less intense. More temperate “. And he added that it is estimated that this new climate change might last ten thousand years.
Europe record
As Buenos Aires goes from extreme cold to temperate temperatures, Europe is experiencing one of its most extreme summers. The UN published an alarming report on Tuesday where it says that such high temperatures are “a threat to humanity”. However the effect of climate change it would not be the same in the two hemispheres.
“In the North there is more continental shelf. Which means that the Sun heats more land and that affects even more abrupt temperature changes. In our hemisphere it is different. The South has more sea surface, which regulates the temperature more. That is why here we estimate that next summer it will be within normal values, or perhaps a little higher. In addition, it must be taken into account that urban centers such as the City of Buenos Aires have an effect called heat island and makes the temperature rise several degrees”.
Cold wave
Localities of fourteen provinces and the City of Buenos Aires are under extreme cold alert and Esquel, in Santa Cruz, was the coldest city in the country this Tuesday morning, with -9.1 degrees, according to the National Meteorological Service.
According to the temperature ranking published by the SMN, there were 34 locations with temperatures below zero. Behind Esquel were El Calafate (Santa Cruz) with -8.6 degrees and a thermal sensation of -13.3.

The list continues with La Quiaca (Jujuy), with -7.6 degrees; Trelew (Chubut) with -5.6 and a thermal sensation -9.1; Azul (Buenos Aires), with -5.5 degrees, Ciudad Jardín Lomas del Palomar (Buenos Aires), with -4.8.
But the extreme cold ends quickly. This weekend, according to the SMN forecast, there will be an abrupt jump in temperature throughout the country. For this Saturday between 15 and 18 degrees maximum are expected in the center and part of Patagonia. And between 29 and 30 degrees maximum in some northern provinces such as Formosa, Chaco, some areas of Salta and the north of Santiago el Estero. In the Metropolitan area, maximum temperatures of 25 degrees are expected.
The alergies
Climate change and oscillations have a particular impact on those who suffer from allergies and respiratory diseases. The most noticeable impact is the extension of the period of suffering. “We are seeing how allergies behave. They are no longer stationary. They used to occur more often in the fall and spring. But now there are also winter and summer, which historically were not months of allergies,” said Daniel Buljubasich, a pulmonologist and former President of the Argentine Association of Respiratory Medicine (AAMR), adding: “Currently allergic pathologies occur throughout the year”.
According to the specialist, in Argentina they are common allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma. “Both have treatment. To improve the symptoms it will be necessary to speak with the doctor to extend it throughout the year.” Regarding the abrupt changes in temperature, she assured that “strong drops in temperature can cause colds and accentuate the symptoms for those who have chronic diseases.”
