After school is before school. How to close learning gaps and start the new school year with confidence.

Even if recreation and leisure time should be the priority for Austria’s schoolchildren, one thing is certain: the next school year is not that long in coming. At least not when it comes to school deficits. In the summer holidays, you can make up for lost time without any pressure or stress. “After school is before the next school starts,” says Markus Kalina, regional manager of the student aid Austria, in a nutshell.

Effective preparation for the new school year

With a view to autumn, students and parents should start in good time to close learning gaps. According to experts, this is already an issue because the summer holidays can be planned well and become a well-functioning mix of regeneration and knowledge transfer. “The holiday season is primarily for relaxation, no question. Tutoring during the summer vacation can be an opportunity to close existing learning gaps with little effort, away from the stress of school,” says Kalina.

With method and balance

When it comes to the question of the need for extra tuition, mathematics has been a perennial favorite for years. But Austria’s schoolchildren also need help when it comes to language skills. “We currently see major knowledge gaps in the languages, primarily in German. Demand here has increased noticeably since the beginning of the pandemic,” explains Kalina. Why is that? “Especially when it comes to language skills, social exchange is important. This suffered from distance learning during the Corona period.” The following-effects are still clearly noticeable. “It’s important to keep at it and avoid learning gaps.”
