Did you know that “Crying in the Rain” is an adaptation of an American song?

Well Mario Pelchat either! The Quebec singer made the confession during the show “Sucré Salé” on Monday evening.

The original version of this hit is “Tears in the rain” performed by Robin Beck in 1989.

“I learned it in an interview with a Lebanese journalist. I told him that, yes I liked it a lot, but deep down inside I was pissed!”, he told Mélanie Maynard.

“I had not been told. It wouldn’t have been bad at all to tell me. It’s still one of the biggest hits I’ve had. What would it have been like to tell me that rather than to tell me that it was composed for me…”

But “Crying in the Rain,” which turns 30 this year, isn’t the only song from the 1990s that was a mega-hit in its Quebec version, but was a hit elsewhere before.

Here are some examples that might surprise you!

“Kill me” – Dan Bigras – 1992

This song was one of the biggest hits. But the same year, it is also at the top of the charts in France, sung by Florent Pagny. So who really is the author?

This is Franck Langolff (and Francis Basset) who released the first version of “Tue moi” in 1986.

“The Black Eagle” – Marie Carmen – 1992

If you are told “The Black Eagle” you immediately think of Marie Carmen who had a huge success with her cover popularized in France in 1970.

“All the cries the SOS” – Marie Denise Pelletier – 1987

In 1987, Marie Denise Pelletier recorded her second album on which we find two of her greatest hits: “Pour une histoire d’un soir” and “Tous les cris les SOS”.

This song had been very successful two years earlier when it was released in France. It was Daniel Balavoine (performer of Johnny Rockfort in the very first version of Starmania) who wrote, composed and performed this piece.

“There is love in the air” and “We are going to love each other” – Martine St-Clair – 1984

The mid-1980s was the highlight of Martine St-Clair’s career. The album “There is love in the air” appeared in 1984 on which we find the titles “I love it”, “Place in the sun” or “A great love story”.

We find there especially the flagship song “There is love in the air” which was released the year before in France. Performed by Bruna Giraldi, the song had sold over 500,000 copies.

On the same album, there was also the song “On va s’aimer”. It is also a cover, but of the French singer Gilbert Montagné (written by Didier Barbelivien).

“Over There” – Corey Hart and Julie Masse – 1998

The Hart-Masse couple took up this song by Frenchman Jean-Jacques Goldman in 1998, who had performed it in 1987 with the British Sirima.

The latter had a tragic fate when she was the victim of feminicide in 1989, stabbed to death by her spouse at the time and father of her son.

“The Bird” – René Simard – 1971

It was with “L’oiseau” that the young René Simard was discovered in Quebec. The song was a hit with over 200,000 albums sold. Young René even filled the Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, one of the largest concert halls at the time.

“The bird” is in fact a cover of the credits of the French television series “Sebastien among men”. The title was recorded by a soloist of the choir of the Petits Chanteurs d’Asnières, Bruno Victoire Polius.

As in Quebec, the song was a huge success with more than 1,600,000 copies sold of the various editions of the 45 rpm.

“Under the sunlight of the tropics” – René Simard – 1985

We find René Simard and the Frenchman Gilbert Montagné for the summer song “Sous le sunlight des tropiques”, released in 1985.

Composed by Gilbert Montagné (and still Didier Barbelivien), the title will be successful on both sides of the Atlantic.
