The San Diego Padres have designated Venezuelan infielder Rougned Odor for assignment and sent catcher Austin Nola to Triple-A, the team announced Tuesday among a series of other moves.
The Padres made the announcement before beginning a three-game series in Toronto.
Catcher Luis Campusano was activated from the 60-day disabled list, while outfielder Taylor Kohlwey was called up to the big club, as was infielder Alfonso Rivas. For his part, utility Brandon Dixon was demoted to Triple-A and right-hander Reiss Knehr was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
Campusano, who underwent surgery to repair a ligament in his left thumb on May 12, played eight rehab games between the Arizona Complex League and Triple-A El Paso, going 7-for-25 with one home run.
Nola has struggled all season and has played little since early June with the arrival of Gary Sanchez. He’s hitting .146/.260/.192 with one home run in 52 games.
San Diego has seven days to trade Odor or place him on waivers. With his positional versatility (he’s played second, third, first and right field this year), Odor might land a contender in need of a utility. He’s batting .210/.306/.370 (90+ OPS) with four home runs and 18 RBIs in 59 games.
