Public Safety Concerns: Inadequate Enclosure Design Causes Regular Injuries – Urgent Action Required

Two injured in two weekends

Last Saturday, another lady called the ambulance for the same reason: she was also mistreated by the ram. A few weeks ago, walkers experienced the same misfortune. s “And last year too, I was told several facts, laments the mayor. We cannot leave the situation like this and risk an even more serious case.”

Le Thier de Coïsse, a protected nature reserve, belongs to the non-profit association Natagora, which has restored the limestone lawns there and launched eco-grazing to maintain the site. “Natagora entrusted the management of the reserve, three years ago, to the DNF (Nature and Forest Department of the Walloon Region). It is therefore up to them to react. I called them out.”

“The enclosure has been poorly designed from the start”

In the meantime, the mayor has issued an order. The farmer responsible for the herd was asked to remove his animals while the police “sealed” the access gate and placed a word of warning. “And the animals will not return to the site as long as the DNF does not carry out adequate fencing arrangements to avoid new incidents. It is a decision of the mayor, responsible for the safety of the citizens. I informed the DNF of this. who seemed to be unaware of the problem. I asked them to react quickly.”

The Hamoir mayor is all the more pissed that he had raised the problem at the time, when closing the area dedicated to eco-grazing. “The enclosure includes the viewpoint and street furniture, accessible to the public. The place is quite well frequented by walkers. But this enclosure has been poorly designed from the start. It was not complicated to place the fence a little later. I’ve been asking for this change from the start, but no one has listened to me. Yet it’s a matter of common sense. It was simple to do. Today, the cohabitation between walkers and sheep brings danger, the incidents are regular. Now, stop laughing. We have to act…”, concludes Patrick Lecerf.
