Come to Budapest to celebrate athletics

The World Athletics Championships will take place for the first time in Central Europe, in Budapest.

Flaunting a distinctive interior design and a dramatic roof structure, the stadium is already a shining landmark in the city.

From August 19 to 27, 2023, 2,000 athletes from more than 200 countries will come to Hungary to celebrate Budapest, the queen capital of sport during these few days, and participate in the third largest sporting event in the world. This major competition will take place in the brand new National Athletics Centre. With its World Heritage Sites and world-famous backdrop, Budapest is the perfect setting for athletes and fans from all over the world.

14 sessions will be held in the National Athletics Center purpose-built on the Danube bank in the southern part of the city.

Six other competitions will be organized in the beautiful city center of Budapest, accessible free of charge for spectators. The marathon and race walking events will start and finish at Heroes’ Square. The athletes will evolve in a historical setting with, in the background, the panoramic view of the castle of Buda. This district conceals real treasures. There is the former residence of the kings, the national gallery and the museum of history of Budapest. Andrássy Avenue, the widest in the country, will play the star during the marathon. Surrounded by majestic palaces, elegant shops and magnificent gardens, it also stands out with the Opera House or Heroes’ Square, of which the Museum of Fine Arts and the Kunsthalle stand on either side. In addition to Pesti Broadway, it has many luxury brands accessible by the Millennium metro, the first metro in continental Europe.

Inaugurated in mid-June, the National Athletics Center benefits from state-of-the-art infrastructure with a world-class track with a freshly laid Mondo surface and an extremely fast nine-lane course that is unique in Hungary.. A new leisure park will also be created in the wake of the championships in the area surrounding the competition site. It will be the meeting point for students, the general public, runners and fans of outdoor sports. Thus, following the world championships, the bank of the Danube will be open to all inhabitants and visitors of Budapest.

A 2023, Budapestest celebrates the 150th anniversary of the unification of Buda, Pest and of old Buda. Another good reason to visit the Hungarian capital this year.
