Patrick Devitt explained that it was a slide used during emergency landings. The slide, the size of a toy car, fell from a United Airlines Boeing 767. The plane from Switzerland was heading for Chicago O’Hare airport.

He told > that his son and stepfather were having dinner inside when they heard a “big boom” around 12:15 p.m.

Patrick Devitt was heading to his residence following work when the incident occurred.

Once home, he dragged the equipment from his backyard to the front of his house, before notifying the authorities.

The slide hit his house, causing damage to the roof shingles, a gutter and a kitchen window screen.

“It’s bigger than a small car. It’s a very, very large piece of equipment that fell,” added the man.

They called 911 and the FAA, the organization responsible for aviation safety in the United States, arrived within 30 minutes.

The FAA then said that indeed a maintenance crew at the airport discovered that a guardrail was missing.

Representatives of the company came to retrieve the piece of equipment.

It is not the first time that a Boeing 767 has lost a slide, although it is rare.

Such an incident happened in 2016 in Phoenix near Sky Harbor airport and once more in 2019 in Boston near Logan airport.

“It wasn’t a bird strike or anything routine. It’s a rare occurrence that might have caused fatalities on the ground or even affected the stability of this aircraft as it landed,” DePaul University professor Joe Schwieterman told >.

Patrick Devitt added that he was happy no one was injured. The FAA is investigating.
