The company recently filed with the local authorities the relevant documents with a request to expand the plant in Brandenburg to produce more cars and batteries. The automaker has already received pre-approval for some of the changes, but the project is expected to receive full approval only following its environmental assessment. The inspection will also include local residents, who will have the opportunity to make their objections. Public discussion of the project is expected in October.

While building its plant in Brandenburg, Tesla initially faced objections from local environmental groups. The latter were worried that the construction of the factory would lead to negative consequences for local forests and wildlife, as well as put a serious strain on the water reserves of local sources. A new enterprise expansion project is very likely to raise similar questions. However, Tesla noted in advance that the expansion of the plant will not require additional volumes of fresh water from local sources, since the plant has equipment for processing wastewater. This amount of water should be enough to increase production.

According to the company, the expansion of the enterprise will significantly increase the number of jobs. Now the Tesla plant in Germany employs just over 10,000 people. With the expansion of the factory, the number of jobs will increase to 22.5 thousand.

At its Brandenburg plant, Tesla has been building the Model Y crossover since last year. The all-electric SUV was the best-selling vehicle in Europe in the first quarter of this year, according to research group Jato Dynamics. In March, Tesla announced that its factory had reached 5,000 electric vehicle production per day. While the company still lags behind the biggest German car brands in terms of total sales, the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 were Europe’s best-selling electric vehicles in the first quarter, easily overtaking the likes of the Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4, the report says. Jato.

In the first five months of this year, Tesla sold 13,294 electric vehicles in the EU, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the UK, increasing its market share to 2.6%, according to the Association of European Automobile Manufacturers. According to this indicator, the American company overtook automakers such as Nissan and Volvo.

It is noted that the growth of the European market for electric vehicles has slowed down somewhat, but sales are still strong. In the first five months of 2023, all-electric vehicle sales in the EU, EFTA and the UK increased by 42.3% to 730,137 vehicles in absolute terms, according to the latest figures from the Manufacturers Association. In May alone, electric vehicles accounted for 14% of total new car sales.
