The role of diet in the appearance of acne has not been proven by any scientific study. We are interested here in its impact on acne already present.
long called adult acnel’hormonal acne is mainly caused by the obstruction of the pores linked to an overproduction of sebum. Very often, female hormones are involved. And stress can also play a role…as can diet.
Understand where hormonal acne comes from
Caution : If the impact of a diet with a high glycemic index and a high consumption of dairy products on the development of acne seems to be proven, the anti-acne diet is quite controversial. Whether diet can make acne symptoms worse no scientific study confirms that it can be the cause of its appearance.
Acne is intimately linked to hormonal variations to which women are particularly prone throughout their lives, from puberty to menopause, including pregnancy… In adulthood, hormonal acne is mainly located on the lower face, jawline and chin.
What is known is that androgens contribute to the development of acne. These hormones – naturally secreted by the adrenal glands, the testicles and the ovaries – cause the appearance of male sexual characteristics (hair growth, deeper voice, Adam’s apple, etc.). Present in small quantities in women, androgens allow the development and maintenance of hair but also the synthesis of certain female sex hormones such as estrogen.
The link with acne? In the human body, androgens will stimulate the production of sebum by the sebaceous glands. Result ? I’excess sebum will prevent dead cells from eliminating properly and constitute a favorable culture medium for the development of pro-inflammatory acne bacteria.
What are the links between diet and acne?
The link between diet and acne has been proven by dozens of scientific studies, reviewed by the Journal of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. More specifically, it is thepro-inflammatory diet which is in question, namely foods that promote the triggering of a protective mechanism of the body: inflammation. This is especially the case with the modern diet, with sugary and ultra-processed foods, whose glycemic index is high, being linked to higher levels of inflammation, affirms a study relayed by the journal Obestity Reviews. They will raise blood sugar levels and maintain inflammation. To compensate for this elevation, the pancreas secretes more insulin…which can promote overproduction of androgens and, in fact, create breeding ground for acne.
What foods promote hormonal acne?
What we eat has an impact on our health and, more often than not, this is reflected in our physique. Without directly causing rashes, certain foods will promote inflammation and, thus, accentuate the symptoms of hormonal acne. In question ? Foods that are too fatty, too sweet but also alcohol…:
- Sugar
- The candies
- Cakes
- Pastries
- Fried foods high in bad fats
- Crisps, rich in bad fats
- Butter
- Industrial cheeses
- Las ultra-processed foods,
- Foods high in trans fatty acids
- Foods rich in non-complete carbohydrates (made from white flour)
- The alcohol
To consume with moderation ; dairy products. But to avoid deficiencies, care must be taken to find sources of calcium and vitamin D. This is the case with soy, almond or rice milk, soy and its derivatives; to a lesser extent canned tuna and salmon, with the bones, can also be interesting. You can also combine foods rich in calcium and foods rich in vitamin D to meet your needs.
What foods should be favored to fight adult acne?
On the contrary, certain foods with an anti-inflammatory action can contribute to reduce the marks of hormonal acne on the skin :
- The green vegetables
- Fresh fruit with a low glycemic index
- Stem foods with good fats: omega 9, 6 and 3, oilseeds, avocados
- THE antioxidant foodss (red fruits, green tea, but also spirulina and many others!)
- The complex carbohydrates found in ‘whole’ foods such as whole wine, whole grains…
Another interesting track, that of foods rich in zinc, a nutrient whose favorable effects on healing and acne are proven. It is found in: oysters, calf’s liver, beef, veal, lamb… but also sesame seeds and butter, dried shiitake mushrooms and certain legumes…
