Dietary supplements prohibited for patients with cholesterol

1- Potassium

Potassium is of great importance to the health of the body, as it contributes to stimulating blood circulation, controlling blood pressure, strengthening the heart muscle, regulating its beats, and maintaining fluid balance in the body.

However, cholesterol patients are prohibited from taking potassium supplements if they are taking high blood pressure medications, such as ACE inhibitors, that reduce potassium excretion in the urine.

And taking potassium supplements along with ACE inhibitors may increase the risk of developing hyperkalemia, and its symptoms include “palpitations, chest pain, nausea and vomiting.”

2- Red yeast

Red yeast products have been shown to contain high levels of monacolin K, which in turn helps lower bad cholesterol, sugar and blood pressure.

But it is better for cholesterol patients to completely stay away from red yeast products, because they are not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and are not subject to control, which makes their contents vary from one product to another, in addition to the variation in the proportion of monacolin K.

And in a 2021 meta-analysis of 37 red yeast products, researchers found that at least one product contained citrinin, a mycotoxin, whose elevated levels increase the risk of kidney fibrosis.

3- Garlic supplements

A previous study revealed that garlic supplements contribute to the reduction of harmful cholesterol in the blood, and this is due to the good content of a bioactive compound called allicin.

But if a cholesterol patient is taking anticoagulant medications, he should avoid garlic supplements, as they thin the blood, which puts him at risk of bleeding when both are taken.
