“We support the government’s measure to combat the price increases of basic foods by limiting commercial additions, and we apply it even before August 1, the date on which it becomes mandatory according to the government ordinance,” declares Magda Amarie, Profi’s operational director. “We are convinced that the help we provide will be beneficial for our customers to whom, and on this occasion, we thank them for the trust they give us.”, the retailer’s statement shows.

Starting from the weekend that just passed, in all Profi stores the products with capped additions according to the legislation on combating the excessive increase in food prices, represented by the Emergency Ordinance no. 67/2023, are easier to find, being marked on the shelf with a yellow label with the text “ADDED ALREADY MIC”.

As is known, the list of products subject to the ordinance issued by the Government of Romania are: simple whole white bread weighing between 300g-500g, without specialities; fresh cow’s milk 1L, fat 1.5%, except UHT; bulk cow’s milk telemea cheese; plain yogurt from cow’s milk, 3.5% fat, with a maximum weight of 200 grams; white wheat flour “000” 1 Kg; sorghum 1 kg; chicken eggs caliber M 10 pcs.; sunflower oil 1L; fresh chicken meat (whole chicken, chicken cutlery, whole bone-in chicken thighs and chicken wings, standard version); fresh pork (processed pork, bone-in and boneless pork leg, pork loin); fresh bulk vegetables (tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, dried beans, carrots, Bianca bell peppers and capsicums); fresh fruit in bulk (red and golden apples, plums, watermelon, table grapes); fresh white potatoes in bulk; caster white sugar 1 Kg.

Officials of the Competition Council say that capping the commercial surcharge generates the risk of aligning operators to the maximum ceiling

Most of the processors and retailers HotNews spoke to regarding capping the trade markup confirmed that they would apply without hesitation Emergency Ordinance adopted on Friday, with the processors saying that some products on the list will sell at a loss.

Their hope is that the Government will not open a Pandora’s box and extend the 3-month deadline by adding other products with a capped surcharge.

Even the officials of the Competition Council say that the addition of a maximum of 20% to the production cost, in the case of processors, respectively a maximum of 5% and 20% compared to the purchase price, in the case of distributors and traders, respectively, generates the risk of aligning the operators to the ceiling maximum, thus leading to an increase in prices for final consumers.

This, given that Romania had the cheapest food in the EU in 2022, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
