88% of young people under 35 believe that finding accommodation today is an obstacle course. This is the result of an exclusive Wellow – OpinionWay study for Europe 1. Few offers, increasingly high prices, and a lot of competition, some young people even end up abandoning their professional project, for lack of housing. .
“A Direct Correlation”
This is the case of Alexandre, originally from Saint-Etienne. He arrived in Paris following his baccalaureate to join a theater school. First staying with friends, he quickly started looking for a rental, with a budget of 700 to 800 euros per month, but the search turned into a nightmare. “I had no answer, so I started to take small rooms in Airbnb so as not to always squat with my friends. It started to cost me a lot of money”, he laments at the microphone from Europe 1.
After three months of applications without accommodation, he threw in the towel. “At the end of the year, I decided to stop school because it was not viable as a situation. I returned to Saint-Etienne and there I found a job in Lyon”, underlines Alexandre. Worse still, some young people give up their vocation, caregiver for example, because of salaries that do not always allow them to find accommodation. “We see a direct correlation between the difficulty of recruiting with housing,” explains Thomas Corman, the founder of Wellow, a specialist in collective housing. While it is not always easy to find accommodation alone, some young people look for several. Alexandre decided to try his luck once more in Paris a few months later. In three weeks, he finally found a place in his budget, but in shared accommodation.
