NEW YORK — Just a week following parts of the Tri-State region were hit by torrential rains that caused severe flooding, which left one woman dead, and road closures, another round of significant downpours is once more wreaking havoc in our area.
The rain started early Sunday, falling across most of the New York area. Some pockets, such as neighborhoods in and around Islip in Suffolk County, saw an estimated total increase in rainfall of close to 6 inches by late morning.
There were numerous reports of flooding in the Islip area, which had already seen month-long accumulations of rain since midnight. Police reported that Sunrise Highway had been closed in both directions from Oakdale Merge to Brentwood Road.
But rain wasn’t the only threat to hit the tri-state area in the early morning hours; Also, several tornado warnings were activated. Dutchess, Morris, Sussex and Somerset counties received pre-dawn warnings.

Reports of flash flooding, damage and increasing power outages were still collecting as of Sunday morning, but Mother Nature’s fury isn’t expected to end until later in the day.

A line of heavy rain moved between New York and Philadelphia before 11 am, giving way to prolonged rain throughout the followingnoon. Flash flooding will continue to be a threat for several hours.
By the time the weekend is over, 2 to 3 inches of rain can be expected, with isolated areas getting more than that. The humidity everyone loves so much… probably won’t break until the middle of next week.
The totals will not be anywhere near the 7-9 inches seen in Orange and Putnam counties last weekend. There was so much rain that it hit suddenly, gravity led to a flash flood emergency being issued, a rarity that happens maybe once a year.
The strong storms of last Sunday cost a life. Conditions worsened to the point where the Orange County Executive and the Governor of New York called a state of emergency. Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus said the death of a woman in her 30s who was reportedly trying to evacuate her home with her dog and was swept away by a flash flood was under investigation.
