[ロンドン 15日 ロイター] – Britain’s Defense Minister Wallace has announced that he will not stand for the next general election and will step down as defense minister when the cabinet is reshuffled. He responded to an interview with The Sunday Times. Wallace has held the position for four years and has been one of the leading figures in Britain’s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Britain’s ruling Conservative Party, led by Prime Minister Sunak, might lose in all three by-elections on Wednesday, according to polls.
In addition, general elections are scheduled within the next 18 months, and the Sunday Times expects a Cabinet reshuffle in September this year.
Wallace told the prime minister of his intention to step down on June 16, according to the newspaper. He said he hoped to go public over the summer before the information was leaked.
Mr. Wallace was considered to be a candidate to succeed NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg, but NATO decided on the 4th to extend Mr. Stoltenberg’s term by one year.
In an interview, Wallace said his biggest concern was a military conflict with Russia.
