Two fatal accidents occurred this Sunday during the Chimay Classic Bikes, a motorcycle event organized at the Chimay circuit. Contacted by us, the director of the circuit confides above all to deplore “the situation vis-à-vis the families“. “This is not what we are looking for, it is above all a great celebration for old motorcycles. The meeting went very well on Friday and Saturday, we had no medical intervention. And today (Sunday), we have two systematically heavy interventions in the category of endurance motorcycles”, told us Jean Yernaux.
The first accident happened around noon. “A rider lost control of his motorcycle. While trying to resume his trajectory, he was hit by another competitor. This shock was fatal“, explained the director of the circuit.
Following this fatal accident, the police went to the scene and drew up a report. “A pilot error can be fatal as it can not be. This is exactly what happened today. It’s a racing fact“, said Jean Yernaux.
Interrupted at the beginning of the followingnoon, the event resumed around 2 p.m. The second fatal accident occurred a few hours later. “It is on a departure. Five competitors try to decide on the pole position. Everyone speculates on who will arrive first, but in the end no one brakes and it’s the accident“, specified the director of the circuit. Following the collision, three people were seriously injured. One of the pilots affected succumbed to his injuries following being evacuated by ambulance.
Very saddened by these dramas, the director of the Chimay circuit recalls that the risk is always present in motor sports. “As the English always say, Motor sport is dangerous. Motor sport is dangerous. We sometimes forget that those who ride a motorcycle take terrible risks, but they do it out of passion.“, concluded Jean Yernaux.
