2023-07-15 11:07:00

A study by the Leipzig University Medical Center put prejudices regarding mouth and throat cancer into perspective.

It shows that these types of cancer do not mainly occur in people with excessive sex life and many different sex partners. This is how the “Salzburger Nachrichten” reports.

It has been observed that the sex life of patients with oropharyngeal cancer does not differ from that of a healthy person. The disease itself is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV).

HPV is a common virus that can attack the skin and mucous membranes and can cause precancerous lesions or cancer. About a third of the mouth and throat tumors diagnosed in Germany are caused by HPV.

The study confirmed already known risk factors such as tobacco smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Vaccinations once morest certain HPV types are possible in Germany for girls and boys from the age of nine.
