Meta confirms it is blocking Europeans from using Threads via VPN

Launched last July 5th, the arrival of Threads was accompanied by great success, with a record number of users in the first week! But despite the phenomenon, not everything is rosy.

Initially the network was not launched in Europe – a large market for Big Techsand now even old continent users who were using the web application via VPN are losing their access.

Available in more than 100 countries, including Brazil and the United Kingdom, Mark Zuckerberg’s new network does not seem to comply with the rules established by the European data protection law; hence the likely delay in launch and blocking of European users.

The network is also suspected of violating the Brazilian general data protection law (LGPD).

Although Threads is not yet officially available on the continent, apparently some users were circumventing this geographic limitation by using VPNs, disguising their real location.

But the party is over (at least, for now). Meta has confirmed that it is blocking users in European countries from using Threads via VPN! Thus, network content – as well as profiles and notifications – are no longer loaded.

“Threads is currently unavailable in most European countries and we have taken further steps to prevent people in these countries from accessing content on the network. Europe remains a very important market for Meta and we look forward to bringing Threads to more countries in the future,” said a Meta spokesperson.
