In December 2018, Netflix released “Bird Box”, the adaptation of the novel “Blindly”, with Sandra Bullock as the protagonist. The story regarding an unknown entity causing the death of the population captivated the public and was viewed by more than 45 million subscribers in just one week. Now, that title intends to repeat the success with Mario Casas aboard a ‘spin-off’ that is already available to watch in streaming.

Being two stories that have the same title, it is difficult not to compare them. The “Bird Box” of 2018, directed by Susanne Bier, introduced us to a solid Sandra Bullock in the role of Malorie, the mother of Olympia and Tom, the shortlist on which the story of a family trying to find refuge revolves. in the face of danger, embodied in this entity that no one might look in the eye because it meant immediate death.

Five years later, it is the turn of the Spanish actor Mario Casas (“Three meters above the sky”). Netflix recruited him to star in the ‘spin-off’ that this time is set in the city of Barcelona. Although the story of this film is not directly connected to the one starring Sandra Bullock, it is necessary to clarify that it does develop the same world catastrophe. That’s where the similarities are.

In “Bird Box Barcelona” Mario Casas gives life to Sebastián, a man who seems to have the perfect life: a wife, a daughter and a successful company. Until the moment the world collapses because of the ‘creatures’ who can’t see. But the Spaniard is not so convincing in this role, which he is one of the most adult he has played in his career.

The actor is accompanied by a cast of different nationalities, which provide rhythm to the story. There are the Spaniards Patrick Criado (“La Casa de Papel”), Lola Dueñas (“The Sea Inside”), Alejandra Howard (“El páramo”) and Gonzalo de Castro (“El inocento”). But also the German girl Naila Schuberth, the British Georgina Campbell (“Bárbaro”), the Mexican Diego Calva (“Babylon”) and the Argentine Leonardo Sbaraglia (“Wild Tales”).

In “Bird Box Barcelona”, the role played by the protagonist is not far from that of the original film. Yes, in 2018 we had a mother who was concerned and capable of anything to ensure the well-being of her children. Here, at the beginning of the ‘spin-off,’ we see a father who will do everything possible to ‘recover’ his daughter Anna (Alejandra Howard) in the midst of a global crisis. Although soon we will be presented with a ‘twist’ that adds points to the final result.

Another factor that is familiar, but at the same time is presented in a different way, is the ‘pleasure’ of opening the eyes –literally- to those who do not want to see these ‘creatures’. But in Barcelona, the enemy is much closer than we imagine at the beginning of the film.

This spin-off’s mission is to surpass what Sandra Bullock achieved in “Bird Box”… and it falls short of that goal.

Although the plot of “Bird Box Barcelona” is more complete than its predecessor and resolves more questions regarding the actions of the ‘creatures’ that motivate the story, the interpretation of Mario Casas has lacked weight and, at times, the leading role It has been stolen by Georgina Campbell who gave life to Claire, one of her companions in the attempt to survive the attack of these ‘mysterious entities’.

Sometimes even the performances of little Anna (Alejandra Howard) and Sophia (Naila Schuberth) are stronger on screen because of how heartbreaking their voices might be heard.

The variety in the cast, as we said lines before, gave a good turn to the production to obtain as a final result a story that might be hooked by the ‘twist’ that it has given to the plot that we already knew, but ultimately it is another Derivative tape that does not surpass its predecessor.
